What's In a Name? Could Be Not Much Good

I sometimes feel I'm wasting my time looking at newsletters from Republicans to their constituents. In his recent email to me, Tracey Mann says it's wrong that President Biden officially turned away from the Geneva Consensus Declaration. Representative Mann bemoans that Biden rejected this international agreement when he took office. The "declaration" sounds a lot like something we should honor, because of the word "Geneva."

However, it's actually an international statement against abortion, initiated by Trump-appointed Secy. of State Mike Pompeo and "cosponsored by the governments of Brazil, Egypt, Hungary, Indonesia, Uganda, and the United States. It was signed by 34 countries on October 22, 2020."

The Wikipedia article on this "declaration" is quite revealing, if you're interested. The article points out that it was not even signed in Geneva, and it has nothing to do with UN declarations of a similar name. If you only consider that the other charter signatories are not countries with human rights reputations, it seems even embarrassing that the US would join their repression of women's rights.

I never cease to be amazed at how many ways the Republican party churns out lies and promotes misperceptions. Other misleading anti-abortion groups are:

· Alliance Defending Freedom, a conservative Christian legal advocacy group fighting to outlaw abortion and LGBTQIA+ rights

· American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds), a small group of conservative doctors

· Americans for Prosperity, a libertarian conservative behind the Tea Party

· Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), a politically conservative non-profit association aimed to "fight socialized medicine and to fight the government takeover of medicine"

· Club for Growth, a PAC focused on reducing taxes and opposing climate change reduction efforts

· Election Integrity Network, part of a right-wing thinktank focused on poll monitoring

· Kansans for Life, a conservative anti-abortion group

· Moms for Liberty, a group dedicated to banning books

The titles of these groups do not give a hint of what their real purpose is. Just like "Moms for Liberty," who ban books and reject rights of LGBTQ children, these groups hide their repressive agendas in high-minded names.
